Packaging Vs. Labeling

As you start to prepare products for customers, you might wonder if labeling and packaging are the same thing. While they do offer some of the various similarities, you need to understand that there are differences which play a part in product manufacturing.

What Packaging Is

Packaging in a nutshell is basically everything that a package has surrounding it. This is basically what goes over your products in order to protect it when you transport it from point A to point B.  this is great for a lot of people to properly transport and move the products. Some of the most common types of packaging are:

  • Metal

  • Wood

  • Corrugated cardboard

  • Plastic

  • Paper

  • Cloth

There are different types of packaging too, as this is what will house your products. These do include the primary packaging which goes right over the product itself, and usually is what the product comes in.

There is also a secondary which is your next level that offers protection from damages. This is usually used for products that are fragile like glassware, or anything which might leak when you put it in there.

The third type is transportation packaging, which is the product packaging that’s used when you transport stuff, and it helps protect items from spilling, and offers very secure shipping for said items.

This protects the package and gives it a neat little home that will house products of all kinds.

What Labeling Is

Labeling in contrast is basically something that you put over or wrap the product in.

The goal of this is to attract other people to these products, and also showing the necessary information.

These can include:

  • The name of your product

  • The price for someone to look at

  • Barcodes to scan

  • Logos and brand names

  • The number or quantity of the items that you’re getting.

  • Important qualities related to said product.

There are different kinds of labels that you can use. Some of them are just overall labels that discuss what it does, and also the important tidbits to tell people about the package itself. These can include the label of the brand.

There is also a grade label, which is a fancy word for describing important tidbits and quantities that are related to these products. They also have description and informative labels, which are labels that involve you finding out information about the characteristics, and additional necessary information about said product.

The differences

Right now, both are necessary to offer the product to a customer. You need packaging in order to provide a safe location for your items, and also to inform them of the contents within.  The biggest difference is the goal of the packaging.  Both of them are used to sell things, but a big difference between the two is that the packaging is used to keep a product safe and sell the item on the outside, the label is supposed to tell you everything that you need to know.

The other primary difference between this as well is the design. Packaging is usually more based on shapes, while labels are based on what’s  said, such as the contents of a package itself.

While there are differences between both of these things, they do ultimately talk about everything that you need to know. Both are vital however for getting the message about your product across, so you do need both of these in order to sell packages and products. Make sure you don’t skimp  on this ether, especially if you want to deliver lots of products.
